First DMD-T System Delivered and 3-day Training Programme Completed

Last month, Tritech International Ltd successfully delivered the first production unit of the new Diver Mounted Display Tethered system (DMD-T) to the Houston Police Department Dive Team. The Diver Mounted Display system enables divers to navigate, locate targets and avoid obstacles from up to 120m away in zero visibility conditions by utilising multibeam sonar technology.

Following delivery of the DMD-T, Trident Training Solutions conducted a tailor-made, intensive, 3-day training programme to the Houston Police Department Dive Team covering everything from how to set up the system to how to identify targets at a long-range and use the sonar to navigate towards them.

During the three-day training session, the team completed a number of successful dives and were able to locate a submerged car. This short video shows the significance of sonar positioning whilst using the Diver Mounted Display to locate a target and navigate safely.

The DMD-T comprises of topside and diver-mounted components. On the diver, there is a slimline monocle that can be flipped up and down in the water which is mounted on the diver's mask or helmet, an above eye-level multibeam sonar, and a subsea computer which processes the signal from the sonar and is clipped onto the diver's belt.

A custom-made cable then enables the sonar signal and diver comms to be sent to the topside dive team who operate the DMD Surface Control Unit (DMD SCU). The DMD SCU allows the dive team to control and monitor the same sonar signal the diver is able to see through their monocle as well as send messages and directions down to the diver, up to 120m away.

The system is compatible with Tritech's Gemini 1200ik dual frequency multibeam sonar, the Gemini 720ik and soon, the smaller Gemini 720im. The data from the multibeam sonar allows the diver to see in zero visibility water for up to 120m (depending on the sonar selected).

The Gemini sonar range have the added benefit that they can be removed from the DMD system and used polemounted or on a ROV. This allows for different search techniques to be utilised with the same sonar without the need to purchase a different system.

The Diver Mounted Display is available as a tethered (DMD-T) and an Untethered (DMD-U) system, with a full training programme available for purchase in the United States from Trident Training Solutions.
