What if acoustic deterrents were only activated when a seal was actually present?

Using Tritech's multibeam imaging sonar, researchers Douglas Gillespie, Rob Harris, and Carol Sparling from the University of St Andrews developed an automated system that detects seals in real time and activates an Acoustic Deterrent Device (ADD) only when a seal is present.
A compelling 124-day field study on the triggered deterrence of seals from a salmon river demonstrates how intelligent monitoring can improve effectiveness while reducing environmental impact.
The results showed that automated, event-triggered acoustic deterrence can significantly reduce seal incursions while minimizing unnecessary acoustic exposure to other sensitive wildlife.
An excellent example of how targeted, data-driven technology can deliver better outcomes for both industry and the environment.
